In 1985, Sydney basketball was struggling financially. It looked like there was no future for the sport in this city. They Sydney Supersonics and the Bankstown Bruins amalgamated to form the now famous Sydney Kings under the first ever private ownership group in Australian sporting history. The partners included; Mike Wrublewski, Harry Wrublewski, Andrew Lazaris, Harry Engelander, Geoff Frumar and Kevin Jacobsen. Many doubted that they would be successful.
5 years later, 10,500 people saw the Sydney Kings sell out the Sydney Entertainment Centre for the first time ever. That was the night pro basketball arrived in this town. This ownership group unified Sydney basketball. They took the Kings from the State Sports Centre to the Sydney Entertainment Centre and made it the place to be every weekend.
